BLUE PEOPLE 20 20 CHORUS We need people in Blue Who aren't afraid of me and you We need people in Blue Who care about me and you We need people in Blue Who ARE me and you... We Need People in Blue VERSE When the COPS come marching in You know, the way they do Only thing needed to set them off Is for someone to whisper, "Boo" When the COPS come marching in You know, the way they do Only thing needed to set them off Is to politely request that they please don't shoot... VERSE Used to be cops on the job were confident, competent And maybe just a little vain Cops weren't afraid a no ghosts Made shadows disappear with light Cops were citizen soldiers Fighting the Good Fight But that was then and this is now: And now: Cops gotta take an IQ test And can't score more than 100 to get the job Only then are they said to have the right stuff Only then are they allowed walk amongst the mob And now: You got cops on the job with PTSD The aftermath for shooting someone over a bag of weed Or for selling a couple of cigarettes on the streets of NYC Helping a guy drown under the waves of the deep NYPD Sea Don't get me wrong I respect the job It's one of the most noble there is to be done But you can't hire a bunch of 'fraidy cats Send them out to confront their worst fears Not and issue them a fuckin' gun.... CHORUS We need people in Blue Who aren't afraid of me and you We need people in Blue Who care about me and you We need people in Blue Who are me and you... We Need People in Blue VERSE Cops get issued a shiny new badge for all to see And an ID card that entitles the cardholder To Get Out Of Jail, Free Should the cardholder happen to shoot you Or me And don't forget the cuffs, the Taser, and that can of mace They get to wear while riding around in those armored military vehicles As they go about from place to place... No longer required to "Serve and Protect" (Check the doors...) Only to be shiny and deadly As they move from case to case, trying not to be bored CHORUS We need people in Blue Who aren't afraid of me and you We need people in Blue Who care about me and you We need people in Blue Who are me and you... We Need People in Blue VERSE I used to worry about alcohol and cocaine Coursing through Blue veins But that doesn't bother me so much any more Now my concern is the freeze and burn In the name of Good Mental Health That our folks in blue Score off the pharmacy shelf... Bring back the Chivas Regal Bring back the speed Might be better if our finest were high on drugs they want Than some mugs dependent on pharmaceuticals they need... CHORUS We need people in Blue Who aren't afraid of me and you We need people in Blue Who care about me and you We need people in Blue Who are me and you... We Need People in Blue We need Our people in Blue And we need them now Not then The answer is now To that question: "When?" We need people in blue Who have the Right Stuff to do the job The way it's supposed to be We need people in blue Who recognize and believe That BLACK LIVES MATTER. © 2017 and 2020 by Manley for Heart & Commerce

MANLEY album notes

It's a pretty big deal to name your album after yourself. You're pulling a lot of exposure. You name it anything else, and if people don't like it, you can still separate yourself from it. You can say they didn't like the album. Oh well. You name it after yourself, and if they don't like it, are they really saying that they don't like you? Mayhaps.

Still. You get to a point in your life where you'd like to put something out there that succinctly represents who you are, all that you have become, up to a certain point-- up to this point....

So who am I?

I am a storyteller that plays the bass guitar. Other than the drum loops, I also played all of the other instruments on this double vinyl LP recording. I wrote the songs. I produced and engineered the project, so I suppose it really is all on me. It is my hope that I've learned a few things in my years on the planet. It is my hope that I've managed to communicate these things on this album in a way that people can take them in. I made it a point not to make this a bass gymnastics album. As much as I love bass, I set out to make an album of songs that can stand on their own. (That being said, I did include one bass instrumental, the opening track, Overture. I am, after all, as much as I am anything else-- a bass player : >)
